Description: The article is about armour making at the Thames Iron Works. The shipyard built HMS Warrior and made the armour for the ship by hammering iron into plates. In the late 1850's and 1860's they were one of the leading manufacturers of armour, using local scrap iron to make the plates. As armour plates became thicker and more costly to make, the Thames Iron Works concentrated instead on their shipbuilding business. From a South Yorkshire perspective it is interesting that when the Thames Iron Works were making the armour for HMS Warrior they were told by the Admiralty to add puddled iron into the scrap iron they normally used. They obtained this iron from the Milton Iron Works near Barnsley.
